Set in the luscious rain forest of Santubong on the Island of Borneo Malaysia, it is a pristine and special place in the world. The festival line up was impressive by any ones standards, and included premier groups from all over the world. This was Inka Marka's third appearance at the event, having performed in 2002, and 2000 respectively. Inka Marka and Black Umofolosi from Zimbabwe are the only groups to have been invited back to this event three times. 2007 was the 10th year anniversary of this festival and also Malaysia's 50th year of Independence celebrations. The festival was held over three days, with a combination of workshops and Main stage performances. The lush Sarawak T9ourism village was the site for the event, and the unusual and exotic longhouses of the rainforest people were the host venues for many of the workshops, and impromptu music jams that seemd to be taking place all over the place. Audience participation in the workshops was a must, and foot stamping, clapping, and singing was the norm for these events.

Balmoral Arts Festival

When we were booked for the Balmoral Arts festival we had no idea where Balmoral was. After a quick consultation of a map, we devined that it was about 4 hours by car, east of Melbourne, and somewhere close to the South Australian border. After a few false starts, a side trip to a town that was definatly not on the route map, and several stops for refreshments, we finally arrived, just as the sun was setting and the kangaroos were out in full hop..What a sight it was for us city slickers. to be driving along a country road, to the accompaniament of a hopping kanga... or two...Its when your out in the bush, that you realise the extent of the drought gripping australia, the barren dry earth poking through the yellowing dry grass, that was once a green pasture. The festival was an event that was supposed to cheer up the locals of Balmoral, raise moral, and make them forget the awful tricks that the climate was playing on them..I thought to myslef, that a huge downpour of the liquid gold called rain, was the only thing that was going to make these people happy..Our accomodation was in the local pub, the central watering hole of the district. We were a bit uneasy as we walked into the bar, we've had some bad experiences in the past, out in the country regions of australia, where some drunken red neck has looked at the band members, and made some thoughless comments, or even worse, has made them unwelcome..NOT SO HERE..Balmoral has to be one of Australia's friendliest towns. Within minutes of sitting down, people had gathered around asking Jose where he was from, and where Bolivia was..what did he think about the new Bolivian president, was he a real inka, did he like australia, and countless other questions. Beers were thrust into his hands, songs were requested, and the conversation just kept flowing, with many people from the dining room coming in to meet the guys, and chat with them. We made some great freinds that night..including a generous man who after conversing with the guys, realised that they enjoyed a rabbit or two in the cooking pot. Next day he turned up to the festival, with an invite to his home, as the rabbits were stewing away on the stove..and the beers chilling. It was a great event, and we hope the people of Balmoral enjoyed our visit as much as we enjoyed visitng them..

Blamoral Arts Festival

When we were booked for the Balmoral Arts festival we had no idea where Balmoral was. It was a great event, and we hope the people of Balmoral enjoyed our visit as much as we enjoyed visitng them..

austrian club annual event

A day of merriment and entertainment was held at the Austrian club in Heidlburg Melbourne Australia. Located about 15 mins drive from historic Kyneton, the trip was certainly worth it. The beautifual historic homestead nestled in the mountians and rolling hills of the macedon ranges made for a gorgous vista. There were peacocks, and guinea fowl and all sorts of exotic parrots flying free, and an abundance of wildlife, including kangaroos and the odd wallabie. The remotness of the property and the stillness of the air are what grab your attention first and foremost. The beutiful lilting sounds of Inka Marka playing their haunting andean music drift over the hills and echo back at you. The was so much wildlife that were attracted the sounds of the pan pipes it was almost as if the pied piper had called the animals to heal. The location is gorgous, and well worth the trip out there if you have the time.

Campamiento Latino 2006

This years event, the 22nd anniversary of the Campamineto Latino near Glenrowan Victoria was the best to date. With almost 1000 people of Latino heritage, race, or just plain love of the culture got together for the annual reunion., there was never a dull moment. The hosts of the event, Ada and Freddy Gasser on whos property the event was held, organised the event like a military operation. With Ada's mum and dad, manning the kiosk, along with her sister and brother in law, putting in long hours cooking and cleaning up, delicous aromas, of Peruvian and Bolivian cuisine, wafted outward, attracting hungry tummies and watering palates in their general direction. There were many people to catch up with, and the guys in the band wasted no time...chatting to the various other musicans from around the country who were all there to contribute to the succes of this great easter weekend of camping. This was Inka Marka's second time at the event, the last being 2 years ago, with a different lineup, and different musical attitudes.

This time we decided to come for the weekend, and really get into the feel of the whole weekend and were on the entertainment program on both Friday and Saturday nights. Providing some authentic Andean music to an appreciative and initiated audeince was great fun. The mostly Bolivian and Peruvian audience were well versed in the music, and sang along to many of the songs as Enrique belted them out in his inimitable style. He had the crowd psycehd right up there, and the dance floor was full, with not a space for one more person..Andrew Mellado blew many people away with his inspired quena playing, a newcomer to the "real" andean cultural scene, Andrew's talent was seen by many in the community for the first time. Having performed on the fringes of the community for several years, this was Andrew's first time performing for a complety well versed Andean audience, who knew and appreciated the music, and expected the band to deliver strong vibrant melodies to which they could dance . Inka Marka didnt flinch. After almost an hour of music on friday night, and a two song highlight on Saturday evening that turned into a thirty minute medly of well known tunes, many people went away asking themselves, Why havent we heard of these guys before? Returning to accompany the Boliva Inka Dance group, their strong rendition of Los Kjarkas' favorite sayas blended well with the sensual dancing of the two pairs of dancers from Sydney. TvVBolivia were there to film the event, and there is no doubt that the group will be featured on the equivelent of MTV in Bolivia very shortly. Many photos were taken, but this one is of the casual diing area, showing people relaxing and enjoying some of the atmosphere, in the early afternoon as the Pena was being set up for the evening

2006 Melbourne International Flower show

The 2006 Melbourne International Flower Show was another great success this year. Inka Marka deceided that a little free show was a good way to gain some publicity, so we arrived down by the Yarra River early in the afternoon to get ourselves a good spot, and set up the equipment. The crowds were huge and as the afternoon wore on, they became thicker and thicker. We found a spot under the bridge that spanned from Flinders street across to the Art centre precint. As the afternoon wore into night the band decided to pack up and join in the festivities. After all, its not likely that Melbourne will host the Commonwealth games again in our lifetime.

Port Fairy Folk Festival 2006

This years festival had the benefits of beautiful warm and sunny weather and warm and friendly crowds to match. Each years festival trip is an epic adventure of gigantic logistical proportions. Getting it together to spend the long weekend at the festival and performing all day over the three day event takes a lot of pre planning and organisation which most people dont realise. Many of the people we've chatted to think we just jump into the car, and drive the four hours to Port Fairy and play. First of all the most important thing is securing an advantagous spot to perform in: one with maximum exposure and minimum fall out from the elements. The competition is always keen, but Jose always rises to the occasion literally, by arriving at 6 am to stake the bands claim on some prime perfromance territory. This year he left Melbourne at 2am, to secure the place. The rest of us, drove down the night before and spent the night in a pleasant and comfortable bed, in Warnambool, a close 30 minute drive to Port Fairy. There were some disputes over whose snoring was louder in the dorm room we all shared, but that didnt stop us from getting a good nights sleep. Arriving at 8am, we found Jose with all the equipment set up, the sound check done, and the costumes laid out, ready for the band to start work. A quick Cafe latte, and a bacon and egg roll all around, provided the physical sustanence for the day ahead. With our regualr violinist and co wind player Jaime, on vacation, the group invited our dear freind John Kendall to play with us throughout the day. In between sets with other groups, and rapid costume changes, Mr Kendall provided some awesome licks, and some toe tapping solos to complement the Inka tunes. A regualr guest artist with the band, John has mastered the andean rythms of the group and added some of his own Irish and rockabilly style to his solos to provide a distinct sound to the groove. By the end of the first day, everyone was sunburnt and tired, but that didnt stop the entusiasm bubbling away for the next days play. After a quick clean up at the hostel, and a meal at one of Warnambools finest Italian restuarants, and a few glasses of red, we all headed back to the backpackers for an early nights sleep, and to catch up on the Z'zzzzzzzz. Hard to beleive really, life on the road has taken on the timbre of normailty. ..most people expect that musicians like to stay up all night and party......

Commonwealth Games Village 2006

Monday 6th of March found Inka Marka performing at the Commonwealth Games Village in Melbourne Australia. The turn out for the parade was amazing, with representation from many diverse communities across the globe. This was Inka Marka's third appearance in three years and the response from the audience was warm and appreciative. With many people seeing the band for the first time, our manger Linda had lots of questions and enquiries to field from the crowd. The band perfromed throughout the day, but as afternoon approached, the weather decided to take a turn for the worst. With grey clouds strarting to look menacingly like they were about to dump thier load onto the festival, the band decided to pack up their equipment. With not a minute to spare.. as soon as Jose had the last of the euipment in the van, the first huge droips of rain started to fall.
The group were scheduled to perform at the Seddon Music festival back in Melbourne later that day, so with a quick one hours trip down the freeway back to Melbourne, the rain never eased up for a moment. At times we had to slow down to a snails pace so that we could actually see the road, The wind screen wipers had no hope of clearing the rain from the window as it was so heavy. Just as we arrived at the festival site, the rain grew even more heavy, if that was possible. After a brief consultation with the Festival's artistic director, it was decided that this days perfromance was not going to take place. What can I say, another day in Melbourne!

Shaman

Our New CD: SHAMAN: has been our now for almost three months. The name Shaman came to us as the title of this album because of the spiritual strength and healing processes inherent to Andean music.Music enables people to look into themselves for peace and tranquility. we trust our music inspires people to open their minds and hearts to the beauty of their surroundings and do this. Shaman is Inka Marka's seventh album in ten years and best illustrates their style and technique. They have risen from humble beginnings to become one of Australia's most prominent and respected South American groups. From diverse Latin American backgrounds, five musicians have united thorough their love of music to form Inka Marka. Their music is infused with the strength of solidarity as they strive for a common goal. This album is the product of their trust and affection for each other and their art form.

Inka Marka Music of the Andes

Falls Creek Food & Wine Festival

Falls Creek Food & wine festival January 2006

Inka Marka performed in the Australian Alps at the Falls creek food & wine festival central Victoria in mid Janaury. What an adventure that weekend was. Starting with a 4am start from Melbourne, Jose and the equipment van left Melbourne for the 3 and a half hour journey up the highway to Wangaratta, where he met up with the rest 0f the boys around 7:30 am, who had spent the previous night at our Bolivian freind Freddy's farm, , so they could snatch a few extra hours of ZZzzzzz's before the two hour journey into the Alps to Falls Creek. The festival was a great succes, with many tasty morseld offered to sample. After a lunch of Emu burger, and kangaroo fillet, washed down with some choice Milawa wine vintages, the music flowed gently over the mountain tops, with its haunting melodies echoing through the hills. The band were ushered into the quad chair ski lift, up the mountain, and to the peaks, where this photo was taken. After a sunny afternoon with typical Australian summer temperatures, soaring into the high 30 degrees, the guys started their slow trek down the scenic mountain side, slowly negotiating the blind corners, and deep ravines, Jose constantly reminding us that the roads in Bolivia were steeper and in worse condition, and to "seguir adelante", so we could meet our 10pm deadline to arrive in Canberra that night before the hotel we had booked shut their doors tight for the night. This picture was taken at the sound check on the afternoon of New years eve. What a great trip it was with a week spent at this luxurious resort as guests of the hotel management. The weather was hot and humid, and the people warm and generous. New friends were made and old ones revisited. The band had a great time, and perfromedto a very responsive audience. The fireworks that heralded in the new year were truly amazing and world class.

Thursday 16th February 2006

This blog has been created so we can have an intimate forum to let our our many fans. and friends know what we are up to. As a working band, each new day brings a new expereince. some of them funny, some of them strange, and some of them just downright unbelievable.

Rather than update the website www.inkamarka.com on a weekly basis we thought it more intimate to creat a blog . This way any one of the band members, or our mananger, with a few spare minutes on their hands can jump on the computer and write about their experiences, the intimate workings of the band, and the daily routine of life on the road. We thought it might be nice to start with the story we published on our website last year about our annual East coast of Australia tour.

Inka Marka trip diary :2005
Melbourne to Cairns or Bust
Well to date this is the longest and most arduous tour of our career. When Inka Marka goes on tour its like an adventure. We always leave extremely early in the mornings, the hour that most normal musicians are going to bed. Maybe this is because we perform at a lot of places during the day, more than the traditional evening events, and rather than spend another night in strange hotel bed, we prefer to spend it at home and then just ?Do it?.. It doesn?t always end up the way we plan it though., but then that?s just part of the adventure The tour started as always in Canberra, where Inka Marka has a loyal band of supporters and fans. .This was the first stop from Melbourne and home base with the new cd. We were a little nervous to see how it would be received. There was no need to worry, as usual we were met by warm and generous people who took our music straight to their hearts. The other reason for stopping in Canberra was to pick up Andy, our unofficial 6th band member, CD seller, sound engineer and music critic, not to mention extra driver, and a pleasant smiling face.

Only a quick 4 hour trip to Sydney, home base for two of the band members, and a great reunion with family members and friends. Already calls were coming in to the office about where and how people could find us in Sydney, and see us perform. The pre publicity on the website and mail outs were working. Inka Marka hadn?t forgotten their roots, and performed at the Rocks Tourist Market on the Sunday, The response was great, and a great many CD?s found new homes.

After a week in Sydney, the band was getting a little too comfortable so it was time to move on again. Coffs Harbour was the next destination, and as we headed further northward, the weather defiantly improved. As we sat basking in the sun, doing a sound check, we heard that it was snowing back in Melbourne.

Heading north to Eumundi, we had a date at the famous Eumundi market. Another gloriously sunny day? These early morning starts are a killer.

Brisbane and the Gold coast are defiantly a better place to be than a cold Melbourne winter, trying to perform with fingerless gloves and a super down jacket. The gold Coast seemed to be filled with tourists as one would expect, and many people were surprised to hear our style of music in Australia. In one day we counted people of at least 15 nationalities in the crowd watching us play. I don?t think Cavil mall had ever seen the likes of us before, and probably wont for quite a while. The Gold coast was a nice interlude, and we again met many people who had never heard our style of music. before. Nevertheless they soon got into the groove.

This is the part of the tour that we least enjoyed. the constant driving, packing and unpacking the sound equipment everyday, and sometimes two or three times a day, as we moved from place to place. Our manager certainly had us keeping busy. The next stretch was the longest, Heading northwards to Cairns. Everyday performing in a different town, then packing up the gear, driving to the next place, then falling into bed, only to repeat this the next day, and the next day and the next. Each day is starting to look the same. and we are getting sick of eating take away.. I think we are beginning to dislike Thai food too.
Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton and Mackay all flew past us, then finally Townsville, where we had a small respite. We actually stayed somewhere for more than one night. The Townsville Multicultural Festival was in two weeks, and we arranged some pre publicity for the event. What were the organisers thinking of when they had our Press conference in the Bunning?s Warehouse Café! Anyway, ..they made good coffee. and the press people didn?t at all seem perturbed by the location,

Townsville was a nice rest.. ..well a rest from travelling only. We kept busy, performing at the Local University, the various venues around town, and also the famous Cotters Market ?

Off to Cairns and surrounds, where we met by our dear friends Angela and Segundo, who live in Mossman. They had organised 4 concerts around the region, Mossman, Port Douglas, Kuranda and Cairns. All were sell outs, and we had to promise that we would come back again next year before we were allowed to leave. Far north Queensland is a great place to be, the weather is warm the people are friendly and the food is great. .the only thing missing was our families and loved one. Almost two months on the road was starting to take its toll ..especially on those with small children. Only a few more commitments and then we could head home.
Innisfail Multicultural festival, Townsville festival, and then that was it. We were free to head home. From Townsville we headed to the Gold coast, taking two days to complete the non stop leg. A day performing, then hopping down to Coffs Harbour, where again we welcomed by the resident Inka Marka fans .Its nice that the music is appreciated and received so well. .It makes all the hardships along the way seem worth it. From Coffs to Sydney and a few days taking stock, several performances and hugs from family and friends, before dropping Andy off in Canberra and heading home on the final stretch.

Each year we say.. NEVER Again?..but we?ll just wait and see what happens for next year before we say Never again?.
